Keep in mind that the median end price on eBay can be ambiguous: The median end price is for all listings of Otter Box products which can include bulk listings that sell two or more Otter Box products in a single listing. This can skew data. 

Just how much are buyers paying for an Otter Box? The Research Lab’s snapshot helps us get a closer estimate of the average price as well as the average Buy It Now price. The snapshot below shows that the average price of an Otter Box is $25.00 while the average Buy It Now price is $29.00.

Total Listings, Total Bids and Total Sellers: How viable is your market?

This is the final post in our Simple 5 Step Method for Mega Sales This Holiday Season and we are going out with a bang by talking about a really fantastic free selling strategy which is all about customer retention and making repeat sales to customers that you already have. Email marketing is one of the most effective and efficient forms of advertising you’ll ever come across: It’s inexpensive, it’s targeted towards interested buyers and it’s instant. And that's why email marketing is so important for Christmas sales, so let’s find out more! Here’s what I’ll cover in today’s lesson:

What is email marketing?

For online retailers, email marketing is regularly emailing your list of past buyers to tell them about new products you have or special deals you are offering. It’s also about giving your newsletter subscribers valuable information related to the products you are selling and building a relationship with them.

In internet marketing and online retail, engaging your buyers is really important for turning customers into repeat customers. Email marketing is really one of the best ways you can engage past buyers and keep them wired into your store or your listings - and this is essential to getting those repeat sales.

You can also point out benefits of the newsletter series such being kept up with all the new products and newsletter subscriber-only prices that you might offer.

If you are an eBay Store owner, setting up an email marketing system is pretty easy as eBay Stores have an in-built email marketing system where you can send up to 10,000 emails per month.

Things you need to know about setting up a email marketing/newsletter series:

Managing your buyer’s contact information

In order to reach out to your past buyers, you’re going to have to keep track of their contact and purchase information. The reason for this is so you can easily grab their email address if you wish to email them about a promotion, for example. Note: If you use email marketing software (such as the examples I have listed below, you won't need to track name and email addresses. This is done automaitcally. If you are using a good website system such as SaleHoo Stores, it will also track customer purchases. 

The reason that you should track customer purchase information is so that you can see what they have previously purchased and tailor deals to them. 

If you are doing this manually (without a website tha auto tracks for you) the best and easiest way to do this is to create a spreadsheet.

You can use Microsoft Office’s Excel for this, or if you don’t have Office, I highly recommend Google Docs which is a Google application that allows you to create documents, spreadsheets and presentations.

It’s 100% free to use and it’s really simple, it operates just like Microsoft Word or other word processors but your documents are stored online.

The big advantage of having all your documents stored online is that if your computer fails or is damaged, your documents will be OK. You can also access them from anywhere so if you are away on vacation, you can still easily access your documents from anywhere that has an internet connection.

You can also upload any existing documents you have including spreadsheets to Google Docs and starting editing and saving them online. So it’s like a free backup system for your documents too.

The idea of the newsletter series is to provide value.

Your newsletter series should not just be a selling or advertising avenue – you need to use it as a way to offer your subscribers some valuable or interesting information related to your product line.

Once you have established trust with the buyer, you can start plugging your products, in-between newsletters that are of interest to readers. For example, if you sell cosmetics, offer some free makeup application tips. Even if you are not a makeup exert yourself, you can easily run a Google search for some inspiration. If you sell sportswear, email your subscribers with some sport news or fitness tips and make every other post a promotional one where you plug your products for sale. 

The possibilities are endless and your buyers will love you for it!

How to distribute your email newsletters

Unless you have hundreds of buyers that you want to send your newsletter to, you can probably cope with just using a regular email account to send out emails.

However, if your subscriber list is quite big, then you might want to use an email marketing manager.

A great one is Mail Push.

Mail Push is a cost-effective email marketing solution and you can use it to create and send emails to your subscribers. You can use really cool pre-made templates to make your newsletters really professional and you can even track how many people open the email and visit any links inside the email which is really useful.

MailChimp.com is another option and its basic plan is free to use. The free plan does have some restrictions on how much you can do but is probably still useful if you are a smaller seller and won’t be sending a large volume of emails.

Follow-up emails that earn you more sales! 

I know there seems like a lot to learn when it comes to email marketing, but it's actually super easy, especially considering just how powerful it is. To help you get started, below I have shared a follow-up email template that you can send to your buyers and encourage some repeat sales.

How to Find a Profitable Niche to Boost your Holiday Sales

Welcome to step one of our 5 Step Method for Mega Sales This Holiday Season. If you missed our intro to this series, check it out here. In this instalment of the 5 part series, I’ll show you how to find hot niche items that you can sell this holiday season and beyond!

I’m also going to show you my very own list of 4 quick checks I run to test whether a product will be profitable to sell. I’ve never shared this formula before – it’s one I use in my own personal business ventures – so keep reading as I unravel it!

How to find a niche that produces profits!

Niches are like diamonds; they are rare and if everyone could easily find them, they simply wouldn’t be as precious as they really are!

There is one big mistake that many new sellers make when they sit down to decide what to sell and that is selling whatever first comes to mind. This is usually electronic gadgets like iPhones, laptops or other popular items such as designer handbags or shoes.

These are actually the worst items you could attempt to sell – they have very low profit margins and very high competition from thousands of other sellers who offer the same items.

These products also require a very large initial investment. To give you an idea, Apple requires you to have an annual turnover of at least US$100,000 in most cases before they will approve you as a licensed reseller.

So instead of attempting to sell those kinds of items, what myself and all the SaleHoo team recommend is finding deep niche items to sell.

There are two steps for finding these profitable deep-niches:

1. Gathering ideas for items to potentially sell

2. Testing those ideas and separating the duds from the promising ones. This is where my list of 4 quick tests comes in, more about this soon.

Both of these steps are easy, but it can take time, so set yourself aside an evening, or a block of time that suits you, to sit down and do this. Try and do it in the next couple of days if you can, that way when I move on to the second installment in this series, you can follow along with me. If you can’t get around to it this week, don’t worry, just work at your own pace but remember, Christmas will come faster than you think 

Step 1: Come up with niche ideas (the easy way)

This part of finding a niche is super easy. Essentially, all you need to do is write down a big list of products you can potentially sell. At this stage, you can go crazy and write down as many as you like.

You will make this task a lot easier on yourself if you create a spreadsheet in either Microsoft Excel or using Google Docs (sign up for Google Docs free here). The reason a spreadsheet is helpful is because later, when we actually test these ideas for viability, you can compare sale prices, sell-through rates and all those important numbers and pinpoint the best niche items.

You might find this task really easy, and you might already have a big list of potential niches in your mind. If you already have a big list of ideas, you can skip to my list of 4 tests and test them for their viability.

If you are stuck and want some tips on how to find niches, this information is crucial for you:

To build up your list of potential niche ideas, one of the first places you can look is eBay Pulse. If you don’t sell on eBay, don’t worry, the information I’m providing is still relevant to you, and the tools and data on eBay are a good indication of how well an item might sell on another marketplaces so what we are about to talk about definitely still applies to you!

How to find a niche with eBay Pulse

eBay Pulse is a tool that you can use to get ideas for products to sell: It tells you which products are popular and which are too over-saturated to make them profitable for you.

The key thing is to make a substantial list of potential ideas and note them down (preferably in a spreadsheet, as I’ve touched on).

Once your list is complete, it's time to test those products and determine whether they are worth selling!

 Is your idea viable? Put it through my 4 niche-finder tests!

Niches are items which appeal to a specific market. This is the first thing I check when I’m considering a new product, and it’s number one on my list of tests for finding a new niche.

Niche-finder test #1: Who would want this item?

If you want to know if an item is a niche, one of the first tests is to ask yourself “who would want this item?” if the answer is “everyone would” then it's NOT a niche item. If the answer is more specific like “women with sensitive skin” then you are probably looking at a niche!

Another example is if you sell a niche item such as organic cotton baby clothing, which is a really specific item, you will be appealing to a very specific market who want that line of products which is exactly what we want!

Right let’s move onto testing items for viability.

Niche-finder test #2: Check the sell-through rate

The sell-through rate of a product sells us how successful the item is, or how often it sells. Essentially, it tells us if there is too much competition, not enough demand, or if there is room to make a lot of sales selling the item!

This part of your market research is really important: What we are looking for is items that have a good sell-through rate and sell at a price that still earns you good profits. And without doing this testing part, you could easily wind up trying to sell items at a price that no one wants to buy!

One of the best ways to determine whether an item is viable is by checking the sell-through rate on eBay. The SaleHoo Research Lab is the easiest way to get this number:

If you are a SaleHoo member, your access to the SaleHoo Research Lab is free so just go to http://www.salehoo.com/labs and enter the name of the product you are researching.

Hint: Use commas to separate different product names so that you can test multiple products at a time.

Then view the sell through rate that the Research Lab generates. As I explain in the video below, a sell-through rate of above 50% is what we are looking for, so it looks as though ‘cloth diapers’ could be a good little niche!

If you are not a member of SaleHoo, you can check the sell-through rate by using eBay's Completed Listings data which shows you all the listings that ended in the past 14 days, and which ones sold, and which ones didn't.

Important Note: Although I am doing this series to help you this Christmas, don’t feel like you have to sell items that are Christmas related such as tree decorations or even things that are likely to be sold as gifts. Across the board, sales increase around Christmas and the holidays so even if you are selling something like mops, or my example above of cloth diapers, you can be confident that you will see an increase in sales leading up to the holidays. Around November and December, shoppers are in spending mode!

OK, once you have found the items that have a sell-through rate of above 50%, you can delete all the products on your list that don’t make the cut.

Now you are left with a list of items that are potentially great niches, but there are still a couple of steps you need to take to be positive that you are going to sell the right item, which brings us to the third test that all niches must surpass before I will consider selling them. 

Niche-finder test #3: Determine the correct make and model

Now you know which items are looking as though they will sell well, but to really be sure, we need to dive a little deeper and look into makes, models and any other specifications that the items you are researching might have.

If you skip this step, you could overlook some crucial details about your chosen item. Here’s an example: Using my cloth diaper example from earlier, in the image below, you can see that blue cloth diapers have a much less lower sell through rate than “Grovia cloth diapers” (Grovia is a brand on cloth diapers). Knowing this, I can accurately pinpoint the brand of cloth diapers that buyers are looking for.

Most products have a lot of variations that you need to take into account and do a quick bit of research on in order to know exactly which type sells best. It’s all about being as specific as possible when you do your research. For example, if you are looking into selling lawn mowers, you might find that lawn movers have a sell through rate of over 70%. But, if you dig a little deeper, you might find that regular lawn mowers only have a sell-through rate of 35%, but ride-on lawn mowers have a much higher sell-through rate. Or perhaps John Deere mowers have a higher sell-through rate than Husqvarna. The point is that you need to determine exactly what it is that shoppers are purchasing.

The SaleHoo Research Lab makes this a lot easier, but if you don’t have access to the Lab, just use eBay Completed listings to drill down and determine the exact products you need.

As with the previous step, note down the specified products with good sell through rates and delete the ones that aren’t as profitable.

Niche-finder test #4: Find a supplier with the right price!

Here comes the 4th and final crucial test: Can you find a supplier that can sell you the products at a price that still allows you to make a profit?

Sometimes, you visit a wholesale website, get a price for a product, then compare it to how much the product sells for on eBay and the numbers just don’t add up: How can an eBay seller undercut a wholesaler? Well, sometimes they can!

There are a couple of reasons why this happens:

1. The eBay seller IS the wholesale supplier. This doesn’t happen often, but sometimes wholesalers sell their items direct to the public via eBay, as well as in bulk orders to retailers. It pays to ask your supplier whether they sell direct to the public because it is virtually impossible to undercut your supplier and still make a profit.

2. The eBay seller has purchased in very large quantities or is a preferred reseller. Plenty of eBay businesses aren’t just your typical mom-and-pop -home-businesses. Many of them are medium to large companies with huge buying power. This means they can afford to spend $50,000-$100,000 per order from their wholesaler which earns them some very competitive prices on items. These sellers are always difficult to compete with.

3. By far the most common reason you see lower prices on eBay compared to on a supplier’s website is because suppliers don’t usually display bulk buying prices on their website. You often need to login to their website or request a price direct from them in order to see how much you can purchase items for.

Here’s how to run this 4th and final test on your product:

Use the SaleHoo Research Lab or eBay Completed listings to find the average sale price of any item. Using the SaleHoo Research Lab is the easiest way, just search the name of the product and look for the median end price.

Using eBay Completed Listings, you need to run a search as I showed in the video above and add up all the ending prices that are shown in green.

Count up 50-100 Completed Listings sale prices, then find the average. You find the average by adding up all the sale prices, then dividing that number by the number of individual number of sale prices. Finding the average shouldn’t be difficult, but if my explanation on how to find the average is confusing, try this.

Once you have the average selling price of the item, you need to compare that to what your supplier can sell it to you for. Make sure you take eBay and PayPal fees, or any other costs associated with selling the products such as website hosting, into consideration when finalising the price point.

So what now? After you have followed along with this method, you will have at least one niche item that passed all of the 4 tests I outlined above.

Next up, you need to find a supplier! Furthermore, you need to find a supplier that has good prices that allow you to make a profit. I’ll show you the best way to do this in my next instalment of this 5 part series. 3. Test those ideas for their viability using my list of 4 tests that items must pass before I consider them niche-worthy! Be patient and persistent during this process and remeber what I said at the beginning: Niches are like diamonds; they are rare and if everyone could easily find them easily, they simply wouldn't be as precious as they really are!

Rumors of New eBay Fee for Improved Search Exposure

eBay sellers around the globe are getting set for a rumored new Premium fee that would give sellers improved search exposure. We recently wrote about eBay's changes to their search algorithm, Best Match, and how it has affected sellers. Could this be eBay's solution to seller's complaints about the new search algorithm and the fact that it has caused sellers to lose sales? 

Rumors of this new Premium fee came to light last week, when some sellers were asked to take an "eBay Experience Enhancement" survey. Two questions in particular got survey participants stirring: 

"How important is it to you to improve your ranking in search results?" It then asked sellers, "How would you feel if you could bid on your Final Value Fees which would improve your ranking in search results?"

While some sellers welcome to oppurtunity to pay for added expsoure, this is a real sore point for sellers who are already on tight margins when they sell on eBay. 

Is this just a replacement for the now obselete Featured Listings option? Or is eBay taking another step that will widen the gap between the smaller  "mom and pop" eBay businesses and the Diamond PowerSellers with big budgets for Premium fees?

How to Prepare for AuthorRank and Get the Jump on Google

What AuthorRank Is

If you're like me and you have your finger on Google’s pulse on a daily basis, you’ve undoubtedly heard of AuthorRank. However, I honestly don’t think it’s received its due attention and if you were AFK for a few days or don’t have the option to be “jacked into the feed”, you may have missed it entirely.

Example of Google AuthorRankOver seven years ago (in August of 2005), Google filed a patent for “Agent Rank” which was later masterfully decoded by Bill Slawski. In the patent, Googler David Minogue references ranking “agents” and using the reception of the content they create and their interactions as a factor in determining their rank. The patent suggests that more well-received and popular “agents” could have their associated content rank higher than unsigned content or the content of other less-authoritative “agents”.

Nothing much happened with Agent Rank after that because the idea of ranking “agents” is dependent on being able to identify them in the first place. No great system for claiming an online identify really existed back then; I wouldn’t call W3C’s XML-signature syntax or other digital signature protocol an ideal solution.

Still, ranking agents remained a goal for Google. In 2011, Eric Schmidt expressed that Google still had a desire and need to identify agents in order to improve search quality, stating “it would be useful if we had strong identity so we could weed (spammers) out.”

Literally the following month (September 2011), Google filed a continuation patent referencing a “portable identity platform” which sounds a whole lot like Google+. Profiles on Google+ make an infinitely easier digital signature system than anything that’s come before and, with the rollout of Google Authorship (tying a Google+ profile to pieces of content), it really sounds like that’s what we’re looking at here.

So now Google can start attributing content to specific “agents” and doing just what they set out to do in 2005: rank them.

As early as February of this year, the term “AuthorRank” started to surface in the industry. AJ Kohn wrote a great post on AuthorRank and speculated that this development could change the search game as we know it. He also stated that it would be “bigger than Panda and Penguin combined”.

AuthorRank, of course, wouldn’t be a replacement for PageRank, but would be used to inform PageRank, therefore enabling Google to rank high-quality content more appropriately. I think AJ’s right on the money and that it’s not a matter of if Google rolls out AuthorRank, but when.

AuthorRank will filter PR-based rankings to provide better results

In Google’s never-ending mission to surface high quality, trustworthy content for their searchers, AuthorRank is really the next big step. After more than seven years, I believe they are just about ready to implement it.

Why You Need to Be Ready

I’m certain that Google is going to begin incorporating AuthorRank into their ranking algorithm in the not-too-distant future. I’d put good money on it. All the signs point to it: Google’s emphasis on social, Google Authorship, their ongoing efforts to measure site trust, and their progressive devaluation of raw links as a ranking factor. People want to read content written by credible and knowledgeable people and using AuthorRank as a major part of their search algorithm just makes sense.

Brace yourselves; AuthorRank is Coming

How Long Do We Have?

That’s what we, as SEOs, want to know, right? How long do we have before we need to start worrying about building our own AuthorRank or working on it for our clients?

Stop thinking like that.

It doesn’t matter when it’s coming because once it does, it’ll be too late. Now I’m not saying that the launch of AuthorRank is going to nuke site traffic like Panda, but the impact will be huge. While the rollout of AuthorRank obviously won’t be an algorithmic penalty, sites that have been prepping and carefully building AuthorRank for their site contributors are going to have a major advantage. It may as well be a penalty against the sites and brands that have done nothing to prepare.

The fact is, we have just as long as it takes Google to effectively measure AuthorRank and decide they can rely on it. That could happen tomorrow or it could happen in two years. We don’t know. So let’s all start working on building AuthorRank today.

What Signals Will Factor Into AuthorRank?

Google considers over 200 ranking factors when determining where our sites rank in organic search, so it’s safe to say that they’ll be using plenty of signals to calculate AuthorRank. Here’s my shortlist of factors that Google is likely to use in their calculation:

  • The average PageRank of an author’s content.
  • The average number of +1s and Google+ shares the author’s content receives.
  • The number of Google+ circles an author is in.
  • Reciprocal connections to other high AuthorRank authors.
  • The number and authority of sites an author’s content has been published to.
  • The engagement level of an author’s native Google+ content (i.e., posts to Google+).
  • The level of on-site engagement for an author’s content (i.e., comments and author’s responses to comments)
  • Outside authority indicators (e.g., the presence of a Wikipedia page).
  • YouTube subscribers and/or engagement on authored videos (speculation: multiple-attribution author markup for YouTube videos coming soon).
  • Any number of importance/authority metrics on social networks that Google deems trustworthy enough (Twitter, Quora, LinkedIn, SlideShare, etc.).
  • Real world authority indicators like published works on Google Books or Google Scholar.

How to Start Building Your AuthorRank, Today.

Building your AuthorRank (or consulting with clients to build it) is easy. It’s like Wil Reynolds’s concept of doing #RCS, just for people. Seems logical enough to call it #RPS: Real People $h!t.

Sweet acronyms aside, what do we actually have to do? Here’s how we start building AuthorRank…

Get Down with Authorship

First of all, you’ll need to set up Google Authorship. Aside from getting that sweet author rich snippet in search results, setting this up will give Google exactly what they need to assign you an initial AuthorRank: a tie between your online identity and the content you’re creating.

Don’t Be Lazy (or forgetful)

Once you set up Google Authorship, go and track down all the (quality) content you’ve created on the web and make sure your rich snippet markup is correct by using the Rich Snippet Testing Tool. You don’t want to run the risk of knockout content you’ve created not being factored into your AuthorRank.

Continue (or Start) Writing Killer Content

If you’re working on building your own AuthorRank, this one is easy. Career SEOs have a vested interest putting out killer content. At least, I hope we all have a desire to:

  • Create content that demonstrates our expertise.
  • Help improve the reputation, and demonstrate the value, of our field.
  • Help other SEOs by sharing knowledge.

If you’re consulting to help another organization with AuthorRank, it’s a bit trickier. Still, no matter what the industry, there’s always an opportunity for a brand to provide content that is relevant and valuable.

Selling Brands on Individuality

If you’re a consultant working with a medium or large brand and you’re hoping to get a head start on AuthorRank, you may have a tough road ahead. It can be difficult to get a CEO or head of marketing to highlight their people when they’re concerned about what that will do to the brand. I’ve had clients who’ve been adamantly opposed to letting their employees create content and be a visible part of the company and I’ve had clients who were absolutely stoked to have that opportunity. It really depends on company culture and there will be some companies who may never accept the very cornerstone of AuthorRank. You may want to hire Wil to fly out and explain #RCS to them.

Can We Get To the Good Part?

We’ve covered all the prerequisites at this point, so yes, we can. Here are some strategic ways you can work on building AuthorRank right now. I’ll use the “you’re the one doing it” point of view, but you can apply the concepts to any setting.

Create Content That’s Worth Sharing

It’s just like what we’re doing now. If you’ve been following what’s going down in the inbound industry (particularly, SEOmoz), you know that the definition of link building is slowly, but steadily, changing to “content marketing”. It’s all about creating content your audience cares about. It’s all about creating resources that will help them. It’s all about creating things that they’d actually want to share on their own.

Those concepts are tantamount to content marketing and they’re even more important for AuthorRank. If you’re tying your author identity to content you’ve created just for the sake of creating content or solely for “earning” links, you’re going to be in trouble. Here are a few things that are certain to destroy your AuthorRank as badly as Penguin destroyed sites with questionable backlink profiles:

  • Publishing content on blog networks.
  • Guest posting through guest blogging communities (of course, there are exceptions).
  • Writing content that’s keyword-stuffed or full of grammatical errors.
  • Submitting content to article directories.
  • Spinning articles.

Instead, create content that people will want to share on their own because they are actually interested in it. Only post content to the best outlets available to you (see “Get Out There” below).

Specialize

AuthorRank will be much more variable than PageRank in that you can earn a different AuthorRank in different topic areas. Determine what you’re good at/passionate about and create great content in that area. Sure, you can go crazy with different topics but your AuthorRank will probably end up being fairly weak in a lot of different topics instead of strong in one.

Use Google+, Constantly

If any of you don’t like Google+, too bad. Google is going to use your “in circles” count to determine your AuthorRank. That means you need to make sure people have a reason to follow you. A few quick tips:

  • Post updates multiple times a day. Shoot for 5-7 (there’s no data-backed reason for that number, it just sounds like a great amount to me).
  • Check in on your feed and on the global feed and +1 and comment on stories you find interesting. +1ing content makes people stoked and commenting (in a genuine and authentic way) adds something to the conversation. This will only benefit you, and your AuthorRank, in the long run.
  • Fill out your “About” section and title. People use this information to decide if they want to put you in their circles (especially when they’re on mobile).

There are some great posts out there on how to build engagement and a following on Google+ that are far better than what I can cover here. Check some out.

Befriend Relevant Heavy Hitters

Find other authors who would logically have a higher AuthorRank than you (see factors above and consider checking out Tom Anthony’s Author Crawler) and work on getting them to encircle you. Aside from having them in your following, you can also put your content in front of them every time you create something awesome.

Find them on Google+ and start to slowly and naturally build a relationship with them. You can use Twitter, Facebook, or any other means of communicating (in person is probably the best way, hands down) but you’ll want to be sure they have a Google+ profile. It also makes a whole lot of sense to make sure they have authorship set up themselves, but don’t discount them if they don’t: I’m betting that Google is going to make sure the process of verifying authorship much simpler and ubiquitous before they make any move to start using AuthorRank.

Promote Your Author Hub

Your Google+ profile is the very hub of your authorship; it’s what Google uses to tie all your content together. Building links to it and optimizing it makes a ton of sense. If your Google+ profile has a high PageRank (yes, it gets its own PageRank) when AuthorRank launches, it’s safe to bet that your AuthorRank will be pretty hot.

Help People In Real Life

Attend local industry meet-ups, offer to speak for free at local blogging groups, and apply to speak at conferences. Be genuine and helpful. In your deck, link to a a blog post you published earlier that same day that they can reference for detailed information beyond what you covered in your presentation. Watch as that thing gets social mentions and links like crazy. That's a major AuthorRank win.

Also, consider dropping a few cards with your Google+ profile URL on them.

Get Out There (Selectively)

Building links to your content from within your own site doesn’t carry much value compared to a backlink from another site. You control that site so of course you’re going to link to your own content (you’d be ill-advised not to). Having other sites link to you is much more meaningful because it shows you’re offering value (right?).

It’s the same with AuthorRank. If you only publish blog posts on a site you control, you’re playing with internal links (or at best, sites on the same host). Get out there and guest blog for (Dr.) Pete’s sake (sorry, AJ, even you). Remember to treat this process just like you treat it for link building; focus on site quality. Only pick high quality sites that have carefully curated content, because when that ties back to you as an author, it’s going to be just like a backlink to your site (hopefully you get one of those, too). You don’t want hundreds of guest posts on low-quality blogs with no editorial standards muddying up your AuthorRank. Instead, shoot for a few high quality guest posts.

Daily Checklist to Improve AuthorRank

Building AuthorRank, just like SEO, needs to be an organic and gradual process; you can’t do it in a day, a week, or a month. However, here are a few things you can incorporate into your daily workflow that are sure to help build your AuthorRank over time.

  1. Check your Google+ feed five times and interact.
  2. Chip away at your weekly blog post (you blog weekly already, right?).
  3. Read a post on a site you’ve targeted for guest blogging and leave a quality comment. Start building visibility (and/or a relationship) with the authors and editors.
  4. Look for two or three interesting people on Google+, circle them, and interact with something they’ve posted.

Conclusion

Years ago, Google realized that providing their users with better results would hinge on identifying and ranking the very people who produced those results. Until the launch of Google+, they had a great idea but no viable way to actually get it off the ground. Now they have everything they need: the idea (Agent Rank), the identity platform (Google+), and the verification method (Google Authorship). Now all that’s left is to fine-tune the ranking and roll it into the algorithm.

The impact of AuthorRank will be so significant that we may as well think of it as a penalty designed to punish anonymity and/or a reputation for distributing low-quality content. Regarding the delay between the initial US Panda rollout and the international one, Fabio Ricotta of Mestre SEO in Brazil, said “you have no idea how good it is to have a six month lead on Matt Cutts”. Well, we’ve seen the signs and we know what to do. Let’s make sure this lead doesn’t go to waste. The time to start building AuthorRank (for ourselves and our clients) is today.

Structured Social Sharing Formula - Whiteboard Friday

Video Transcription

"Hi Mozzers. All right. What we're going to talk about today is the structured social sharing formula, and I'm going to go over 10 best practices for rocking your SEO with a markup and how this is going affect Google+ and Facebook. So I'm going to run through these, and then we'll delve down a little bit.

So the first of your five items that you would cover are actually going to do with meta tags that are Open Graph protocol. We have the title tag and the description and the OG image and the type of the website and the URL.

Actually, in five of these, four of these are required. The title is one of the first required items, and we're going to break down that in a moment The meta description is not required, and the image is going to actually become your thumbnail image. The type has to do with your website type, and that's going to actually be default. If you don't put anything in there, they're going to assume that's a type value. The other values that you can look at are author, profile, book, video, and you can look more at OGP.me if you want to look up more about types. On your URL, that's your canonical URL. So it's your permalink. So that's pretty easy.

Then we're going to go over your UTM variables so that you can track your campaigns, and that way you're going to make sure that you're getting your social referral data. We'll talk about your share blurb that goes on Facebook and Google+.

Hashtags, we're going to delve into a little bit on best practices. We can't do a demo on here, but at least you'll get an idea of what to do and what not to do. Moving into the best practices for Twitter and then best of all on how to document and track this. I'm going to save that for last.

So in looking at that, let's break this down. So if you look over here, we have the anatomy of a share snippet. The elements on Facebook and Google+
are the same. You have your avatar, and then you have your name. So it's starts out with your share blurb about the post, and then as move into this, you're looking at . . . okay, here's your title tag, which is actually controlled right here by the OG title. That actually becomes an anchor link to your page, to your URL. So keep in mind those two are related.

Then your description, this could be your meta description from your page. You may want to copy it, but you're not limited to the same amount of space. So you have about 188 characters or less before Google+ will cut that off. Interestingly I have seen last week that about 453 characters on a description. So I don't know if Google is testing things or if I'm part of that test group, but keep it around 188 or less.

Talking about length on the title tag, that's actually . . . I saw 134. I can't imagine a 134 title. So just follow best practices for title. I go to about 80.

All right. So now we are at our image, so your OG image, and you want that to be square. You want it to be 150 x 150 is optimal. The minimum is 120 x 120. This is very important, because if you do not put in the proper image, you can actually put in the code. You could put this OG image directive in the code. Facebook will honor it. Let's say the image is too small and it's not 150 x 150. It may be 110 x 110. Then it will show up on Facebook, and you'll have an image, but Google+ either won't put anything, or they're going to draw another image to the page. If you have ads on your page, you may end up with an ad showing there instead. So this is where you can really rock your engagement because images are everything and people are looking at them. So that's important to get that right and remember how they're working.

One other thing I want to keep in mind in this is we're using Open Graph here and not Schema.org, Why use two tags? We're just doing this all in one. This is an all in one formula to do it all at one time.

All right. So now let's talk . . . . we're done with the five meta tags that are going to go in the head, and so let's talk actually about your UTM variables. Your UTM variables are actually going to start with you have your URL, and you're going to start with your source. So in this case, we're sharing it on Google+.

Then you're actually going to use your medium. So how are you doing it? The medium here we're sharing it on social, so that's the medium. Actually your campaign, this is a Whiteboard Friday. So by doing this, you have voila your social referral data. Keep in mind this is really important because you don't get this unless . . . you're not going to see that something came from Twitter unless it actually came from the Web itself. TweetDeck doesn't send this information. So this way you can keep track and you can track all of your social shares.

All right. We talked about the share blurb. But I want to go into that a little bit more, because on this share blurb, so what you're actually putting in the "What's on your mind" or "What's New" box, that's really important. Obviously, it's important for people reading it, but when this actually becomes in search plus your world for personalized search, that actually can become a SERP. So when that snippet is actually showing, guess what the title of it is? It's your blurb. So you may want to think SEO. You may want to frontload keywords. So think about this. This isn't just a blurb. There's actually some SEO benefit on personalized search.

Let's talk a little bit more about hashtags. As you're entering in your description, you can type in your description and type in the # sign on Google+, and you're going to see an autocomplete. This is SEO. You're typing in "#S" and you can see a list of related. Start over "#SE" and you're going to see SEO. But what's cool with this, a little pro tip, you're going to see what the latest trends are is what people are showing. So if you want to show up within those trends, you can use the hashtags.

Two more things on hashtags. Facebook, just don't do it. Facebook is not Twitter. On Twitter, you could use tagdef is one that has autocomplete. There's twubs. You can out hashtags.org.

All right. So let's move back and talk a little bit more about Twitter moving on in our formula here. You want to make sure that your tweets are retweetable, but what you want to start with is you want to do your campaign variables first, then create you short URL. So you've got this. You're entering all this. It may be bit.ly or it may be a custom URL shortener, and then as you're creating that, you're going to want to create the title of your post and then the bit.ly or the short URL, your at, your by, your at profile, and your hashtag. That whole length should be about 140 minus 5 minus the length of your profile. So at that point, that gives you enough room so that you have space, and voila you've got a retweetable tweet and you have your social referral data.

Okay. Last thing, document and track. I have a worksheet, and this was actually we're doing a Whiteboard Friday as part of MozCon, and I will be speaking about this tomorrow, on Friday. By the time you see this, it will be after the fact. You'll be able to download a worksheet, and that will be in the information below on the post that you will actually in that worksheet be able to enter in there will be a field for each of this information. You'll put in your campaign variables. It will automatically create your URL for you. All you have to do is cut and paste so that when you cut and paste your information into Google and Facebook, all you have to do is you could paste in your URL, and what Google and Facebook will do is they will parse the page and they'll look for those directives. You'll end up with a structured shared snippet.
